Blues Criteria

Archery

Half Blues awarded to up to 4 of the Varsity Match team, provided they beat a pre-set standard. 

Discretionary Full Blues for either:

(1) achieving a score of 810 or above (Albion Round) at the Varsity match and/or a score of 1065 or above (FITA round) at the outdoor BUCS Competition, or

(2) achieving a top 10 placing at the indoor and/or outdoor BUCS Competition.

MT 2016

Badminton

Half Blues awarded to all 6 in the Varsity Match team.
Recommended guideline of Discretionary Full Blues.
Criteria - player must have reached the last-16 in the BUCS individual tournament or have played in at least 50% of the matches for any county team in a division equivalent or higher than the Oxfordshire 2nd team.

TT 2019

Canoe and Kayak

Up to 6 Half Blues awarded at the discretion of the captain of OUCKC. 

Recommended guideline of 2 Discretionary Full Blues.

DFBs at President's discretion.

MT 2016

Cycling

Road:

Half Blues are awarded to the three fastest riders in the Varsity Match team. 

Up to three Discretionary Full Blues subject to the following criteria.  The rider should meet the Half-Blue requirement and at least one of the following in the same season:

(1) placed in the top 5 riders in the BUCS 10mi time-trial, the BUCS 25mi time-trial, or the BUCS road race, the BUCS road race, or obtained a BUCS Gold medal in the team time-trial, or

(2) place in the top third of riders finishing in the RTTC National 10mi Championships, the RTTC National 25mi Championships, or the British Time Trial Championships, or

(3) won an individual medal at the BUCS Hill Climb Championships, or

(4) won an individual medal at the BUCS Track Championships, or obtained a BUCS gold medal in a team event. 

MTB:

To obtain a half blue, a driver must both be one of the three fastest riders in the Varsity Match team and qualify 5th or higher in a Gorrick series (sport category or higher) or scored points in any national (XC, Downhill or 4X race) or be in the top 10% at the BUCS downhill race. 

A rider is awarded a full blue if in addition to the half blue - criteria - the rider medals at any national, XC, Downhill or 4X race. 

MT 2017

Dancesport

For an Oxford University man to be considered for the award of a Discretionary Full Blue for Dancesport he must achieve the following:

(1) He must compete for the OUDC Varsity A-Team against Cambridge.

(2) He must represent OUDC at the IVDA Nationals competition ("IVDC").

(3) He must demonstrate himself to be of the top 3 in his team dance throughout the inter-university season with most emphasis placed on his IVDC team match final result.

(4) He must compete in an external 'Pre-champ' competition and place in the top half of the final.

(5) He must show true team commitment (i.e. He must train consistently hard and have a positive attitude toward his own and others training).
It is important to note that these are minimum requirements for a man/woman to be considered for a Discretionary Full Blue. Other factors will be taken into account including:

(1) Opens results, including "Advanced-Four-Dance" competetitions, as this shows individual's abilities across the whole range of dances.

(2) Individual Comparison.

MT 2017

Fencing

Half Blues awarded to all who fence in the Varsity match.

Discretionary Full Blues awarded to those who start the Varsity match and reach a pre-set standard in the same season as competing in the Varsity match.

Criteria for DFBs:

(1) is ranked top 50 in the UK for Foil, Epee or Sabre or having an equivalent ranking in the fencer's home nation,

(2) has competed internationally for their country at a Senior or Junior level in a Grand Prix, A grade, World or Zonal Championship, and

(3) has achieved a top 8 finish at the B.U.C.S individual championships.

MT 2016

Gymnastics

Half Blues are awarded for:

A minimum score of 48 points on a maximum of 4 pieces (their four best scores) at the Varsity match.

Discretionary Full Blues are awarded for either:

A top 3 rank in a BUCS individual event; or

A total score of 72.00 or higher at Varsity Match.

TT 2018

Ice Hockey

Up to six Discretionary Full Blues awarded by the OUIHC Men’s Blues Captain if one of the following is met:

1. The team finishes in the top 3 of the Division 1 university league (BUIHA Cup Competition) or;

2. The team finishes in the top 4 (i.e. a semi-final position) in the National Championships.

The recipient must have played the OUIHC Blues Varsity Match in the that season and be a register member of only the OUIHC in that hockey season. 

If neither of the criteria stated in points 1 or 2 are not met then the OUIHC Men’s Blues may only award one Discretionary Full Blue to a player who competed in the OUIHC Blues Varsity Match in that season.

MT 2017

Judo

Half Blues awarded to all 8 in the Varsity Match team.

Recommended guideline of 4 Discretionary Full Blues.

Criteria - Fighting as a black belt in the Varsity Match.

TT 2018

Karate

Half Blues awarded to all of the Varsity Match team.

Recommended guideline of 3 Discretionary Full Blues.

Criteria - A medal at any national karate competition eg. KUGB, SESSA, Student Nationals, BUSA championships, KUGB Nationals AND participation in an A-team event at the Varsity Match, or A black belt who competes in all 3 events (kumite, individual kata and team kata) at the Varsity Match, at least 2 of which are A-team events, and displaying outstanding ability.

TT 2019

Lacrosse

Half Blues awarded to up to 13 in the Varsity Match at the discretion of the captain of OULC.

Recommended guideline of 4 Discretionary Full Blues.

Criteria - English Universities or equivalent level.

TT 2017

Modern Pentathlon

Half Blues awarded to all those scoring 3,640 points or more in the Varsity Match, or equivalent standard competition. 

Discretionary Full Blues awarded to all those scoring 4,640 points or more at the Varsity Match, or equivalent standard competition.

HT 2019

Polo

A maximum of 1 [Discretionary Full Blue] awarded each year to a player in the Varsity A/First Team – this DFB is awarded if the Varsity game is won, to a player with a handicap of zero or above, and at the chairman’s discretion. 

Half blues are awarded to players in the Varsity Team who play in the Varsity match, with a maximum of 4 to be awarded each year.

TT 2019

Powerlifting

The OUPLC may award up to ten Half-Blues to the top-ten Oxford lifters in the Varsity competition, provided they lift over 340 Wilks points (unequipped) during the Varsity competition. 

In addition, the club may upgrade a Half-Blue to a Full-Blue if the lifter lifts over 375 Wilks Points (unequipped) at any point during the year, provided that score is achieved competing in either the Varsity competition or a full meet organised and run by a recognised federation. (The federations allowed will be at the discretion of the OUPLC committee so as to not allow aids that would not be available during or in the spirit of the Varsity competition. These include but are not restricted to: knee wraps, mono-lifts, raised heels whilst benching, and deadlift bars). 

MT 2016

Real Tennis

Half Blues awarded to up to 4 in the Varsity Match team at the discretion of the captain of OURTC.

Extraordinary Full Blue criteria - handicap of 9.

HT 2019

Rifle

Half Blue:

A member can gain a half blue by achieving any one of the following:

(1) Scoring above 190 in the Heslop;

(2) Scoring above 140 in the Chancellors;

(3) Scoring above 190 in the Benata

Note also:  A Half-Blue may be awarded for individual performance when shooting in the Humphry match at the Captain's discretion, and (if necessary) with the advice of any external coaches.

Discretionary Full Blue:

A member can gain a full blue by completing two out of the following four criteria in the same academic year:

(1) A score of 195 or above in the Heslop;

(2) A score of 145 or above in the Chancellors;

(3) A score of 218 or above in the Humphrey;

(4) Shooting for Great Britain at national or junior international (U25) level.

TT 2018

Rugby League

Discretionary Full Blues awarded to up to 13 members of the varsity match team at the discretion of the captain.

MT 2018

Ski & Snowboarding

Eligible for a full blue:
If a varsity racer meets one of the following criteria:

(1) Under 150 FIS points,

(2) has been in the top 10 in the BUSC slalom or GS,

(3) wins the overall at varsity, or

(4) both top 3 overall at varsity and also has been in the top 15 in the BUSC slalom or GS.

A maximum of 2 can be awarded per year at
the captain's discretion. 

Half Blues awarded to:
The top 4 blues racers at varsity with a further 2 awarded at the captains discretion. 

HT 2017

TaeKwon-Do

All players in Varsity receive a Half Blue.

Discretionary Full Blue is awarded to any player who competes in Varsity, wins his match and is a black belt.

TT 2017

Triathlon

Half Blues are awarded to those that finish in the top 3 men in the Varsity Sprint Triathlon.

Discretionary Full Blues are awarded to those who, in addition to the half blue criteria, fulfil either:

(1) finish in the top 10% of athletes at the BUCS Sprint Triathlon,

(2) finish in the top 10 in an international race, or

(3) finish in the top 10 in a national level elite race. 

HT 2018

Water Polo

Half Blues awarded to the first 7 in the water.

Additional Half Blues available to up to 6 others at the discretion of the captain of OUWPC.

Discretionary Full Blue criteria - Reach the BUSA finals (top 4 finish at the BUSA champs). If both of these criteria are met, the captain may award up to 7 Full Blues at his discretion.
